Track System Orientation
Understand how the undercarriage track system works, including components, wear patterns, and maintenance considerations.
Understanding Your Track System
The undercarriage is one of the most expensive wear items on an excavator. Understanding how the track system works helps you maintain it properly and recognize problems early.
Safety Notes
- • Always inspect tracks on level ground with engine off
- • Track components are heavy - support properly if removed
General Steps:
Identify the main track components: track chain, track pads/shoes, sprocket, idler, rollers (top and bottom), and track adjuster.
Understand the sprocket drives the track chain, while the idler guides and tensions it at the front.
Learn that bottom rollers carry the machine weight and top (carrier) rollers support the upper track span.
Know that track tension is critical - too loose causes derailment and accelerated wear, too tight causes premature component failure.
Recognize wear patterns: cupped rollers indicate misalignment, sharp sprocket teeth indicate worn chain pins.
Understand that operating on hard surfaces accelerates wear while soft ground is easier on components.
Learn to check track sag - typically 1-2 inches measured at the mid-span between sprocket and idler.
