Hydraulic Adapter Identification Guide
Hydraulic systems use various thread types and fitting styles. Correct identification prevents leaks and damage from mismatched components.
Tools Required:
Safety Notes
- • Cross-threading damages fittings
- • Wrong fitting type will leak or fail
General Steps:
Common thread types: NPT (tapered pipe), JIC (37° flare), ORB (O-ring boss), BSPP (British parallel).
NPT threads seal on the threads themselves and require sealant tape or compound.
JIC fittings seal on a 37° metal-to-metal cone - no sealant needed.
ORB fittings seal with an O-ring in a machined groove.
Use thread pitch gauge and calipers to identify unknown fittings.
Measure thread OD and count threads per inch for identification.
Chinese equipment often uses metric threads - measure in millimeters.
When in doubt, bring old fitting to hydraulic shop for matching.
