No-Crank Diagnosis (Clicks or No Response)

When the engine clicks but doesn't crank, or does nothing at all, the problem is typically electrical - battery, starter, solenoid, or wiring related.

Tools Required:

Safety Notes

  • Disconnect battery before working on starter
  • Keep away from moving parts when testing with key on
  • Battery acid is corrosive - wear gloves and eye protection

General Steps:

Check battery voltage with multimeter - should read 12.4V or higher.

Inspect battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections.

Clean terminals with wire brush if corroded and retighten.

Test battery under load - voltage should stay above 9.6V while cranking.

Check ground cable connection at engine block.

Locate starter solenoid and check for power at trigger wire.

Have helper turn key while you test.

If solenoid clicks but starter doesn't engage, tap starter body with hammer while attempting start.

Check starter motor for seized condition or worn brushes.

Inspect ignition switch and safety interlock circuits.

Verify neutral/park safety switch operation if equipped.
