Diagnose charging system problems and repair or replace faulty alternator.
Alternator Diagnosis
A failing alternator causes battery drain, dim lights, and eventual no-start conditions. Proper diagnosis prevents unnecessary parts replacement.

Safety Notes
- • Disconnect battery before alternator removal
- • Alternator output wire carries high current
General Steps:
Check battery voltage with engine off - should be 12.4-12.7V.
Start engine and check voltage - should rise to 13.8-14.4V.
If voltage doesn't rise, inspect alternator belt tension and condition.
Check alternator connections for corrosion or looseness.
Test exciter wire for voltage with key on.
Remove alternator if bench testing is needed.
Test diodes and stator at parts store or with specialized tester.
Replace alternator or rebuild with new brushes/regulator if faulty.
Reinstall and verify proper charging voltage.
